Non-removable functional devices

NON-REMOVABLE FUNCTIONAL DEVICES

Non-removable functional devices are adjusting the occlusion by changing the position of the lower jaw. The jaw is pushed in the right direction and the teeth position is changing.

These devices, same as removable functional devices, are usually used by adolescents during their intensive growth when they are 12-14 years old.

Non-removable functional machines can also be used for adults, but in this case the growth stage is already over, therefore it is no longer possible to change the aesthetics of the face – only the occlusion could be adjusted. Sometimes this method becomes an excellent alternative for patients who refuse to have an orthognathic surgery and change the facial aesthetics.

The following non-removable treatments are available in our clinic:

HERBST DEVICE

This orthodontic device consists of four metal crowns and metal parts connecting them. The metal crowns are fixed to the teeth and this device becomes the regulator of the lower jaw position.

What do you need to know about wearing a Herbst device?

  • The device is worn for approximately 12 months.
  • Muscle tension may be felt in the first few days. In case of pain, painkillers are prescribed;
  • The device may irritate the mucosa of the cheeks or lips. In this case a special wax can be used for the protection. After 5-6 days, the mucosa adapts and unpleasant sensations disappear;
  • Hard food should be avoided when using the device;
  • Avoid widely opening your mouth, as parts of the device may break. If this happens, you should contact your doctor orthodontist;
  • Visiting your doctor orthodontist is required every 6-8 weeks;
  • Dental care is normal. It is recommended to use a single tooth brush in order to thoroughly clean the area of the teeth on which the metal crowns are attached;
  • After removing the adevice, further treatment with braces is usually applied to maintain a long-term, stable result.

POWER SCOPE DEVICE

It is a non-removable functional device for adjusting the position of the lower jaw while changing the position of the teeth. The device is fixed on the braces when dental arches are already straightened.

What do you need to know about wearing a Power Scope device?

  • Wearing time – about 7-8 months, depending on the situation;
  • The device is activated by special rings to control the direction of the lower jaw in the required direction;
  • In the first days muscle tension or discomfort may be felt. In this case, the use of painkillers is recommended;
  • The device may irritate the mucosa of the cheeks or lips. In this case, it is advisable to use protective wax;
  • Dental care is common, but single tooth brush is recommended. This will help clean the teeth around the attachment area of the device;
  • Hard food should be avoided so that the device does not break.

QUICK EXPANSION DEVICE (RME)

This is a non-removable upper jaw extension that is used when the upper jaw is narrow. This device can be fixed on both – the teeth and mini-implants and is designed to expand the upper jaw; in the case of narrow jaw and crooked teeth.

This device is usually used by younger patients during growth age, but in some cases can be used for adults as well.

How does a quick expansion device work?

The jaw is expanded with a special key by turning the auger in the device. Usually, it takes 2-3 weeks for the jaw to expand. Initially, during the enlargement, there is a gap between the central teeth, however the teeth migrate after expansion and the gap closes within 1-1.5 months. Later the device should be worn for 6 to 8 months until the seam of the roof of the mouth recovers.

What do you need to know about wearing a RME device?

  • In the first days of expansion, pain in the roof of the mouth can be felt, but it can be easily suppressed with conventional pain relief;
  • First, it may be difficult to speak, chew and swallow;
  • After 1-1.5 weeks, the patient adjusts to the device and the pressure on the auger is felt for only a few seconds;
  • Oral Hygiene – Ordinary;
  • It is recommended to use a single tooth brush that facilitates removal of food around the device.
